Six Sigma is a structured process management philosophy that relies on understanding the ability of a process to create near-perfect outcomes.  Process improvement is attained by creating a margin of safety that allows for inherent process variability. By reducing variability, fewer failures- and near failures- are created, lowering defect costs and improving reliability.  Motorola was an early proponent of Six Sigma, achieving a 10X improvement in quality within a few years.  It requires data collection, analysis, improvement, and monitoring tools, and various training methodologies have emerged to certify expert users of these tools.

Lean is a set of principles focused on eliminating waste.  Again, a set of tools has emerged to assist in the analysis and improvement projects associated with Lean.  One of the most powerful, which can be accomplished very quickly with enough manpower and focus, is 5S analysis, which organizes and optimizes an operation for sustainable excellence.
